Their adventure started when the college put the members of the program up in converted housing in the Brookline Asylum a historic holdover from the areas past. Dan, and his friends Jordan and Abby, head back to Brookline to figure out the mystery.

They also find maseleine creepy that Cal and other students believe Warden Crawford to have been a misunderstood genius, based on the information given to them by their psychology professor, Caroline Reyes. With some mysterious information that is sent to them and presents itself to Dan, the trio must make the trip back to NHC and try to solve the secrets in order to sanctuum able to try and move on from what happened.
In addition to the carnival, there’s a secret society with creepy masks and rituals, and we’re meant to be left unsure of who to trust, but it’s pretty freaking obvious from page 1 who’s who.
I did like the mystery of the Warden and how other things were connected. But when Dan and his friends arrive under the guise of a prospective students’ weekend, they discover that the carnival from their photos isn’t just real, it’s here on campus.

Murders, torture, ice-pick lobotomies, and mind control are essential to the plot and presented with amped-up creepiness. The “romance” between Dan and Abby seemed even more forced and pointless. The madeleiine explorations are especially cinematic and spooky The story itself only seemed to grow, and that what made reading this as exciting as it was.
When you’re capable of writing a book that someone can read in a few hours, and still feel as though they’ve thoroughly comprehended what they’ve just experienced, you have talent. Once they arrive, strange and weird things begin happening just like they did in Asylum.
It was just as good as the first.
