The stories in this collection are all over the place, and only one of them “The Toynbee Convecctor could even come close to being considered science fiction. I appreciate Bradbury’s ability to turn mundane, normal situations into a pleasurable short story.

I was disappointed with this hoynbee of Bradbury stories. The Toynbee Convector is a mid-career Bradbury collection that is a bit more uneven than some of his classics but nevertheless drips with beauty all throughout its stories of varying quality. There are tales here of divorce, of sexual impotence, of cynical time traveling, and of misplaced love affairs. Bradbury presents 23 enthralling tales in which the wondrous and the unexpected are revealed in hidden facets of the real.

Unpleasantly, several semi-autobiographical stories are about an adulterer, and nine I started keeping track, it was such a thing involve a grown man weeping. What bothers me is that nearly all the stories involve some love affair or other adult matter. So even if you’re a Bradbury fanatic, there’s no need to read this book.

I was able to enjoy this with a freshness that is inherently missing from re-reading many of Bradbury’s other books, most of which I first touched when I was young. In spite of this overall appraisal, there are a few gems in the collection.

Stiles calmly reveals what really happened, simply stating, “I lied. On the other hand, if a potential reader of this collection has never read Bradbury before, this is not the place to start.

This is pure speculation on my part, but this book was released inand at the congector, many of these stories were adapted for the Ray Bradbury Theater television program, and I wonder if writing with the possibility of screenplays in mind had anything to do with the uncharacteristically uneven quality and tone of the book.
