A part that describes herbs and herbal preparations, is not particularly useful due to the fact that it would be next to impossible to find a special Chinese herbal ingredients that existed at the time. I’d go on and on about why a ‘serious karate-ka’ or whatever should own it, or how it can give insight into the ur-methods of kata design and technical interpretation and the training methods which spring from such understandingand a dozen other things.
This is a monumental work. The material that made it to Okinawa is primarily the bubisho, one-on-one fighting methods, as well as medicinal practices, and sections of it have been incorporated into a variety of karate books over the years, including works by Funakoshi Gichin and Mabuni Kenwa—the founders of Shotokan and Shito-Ryu, respectively.

A large chunk of the book is dedicated to herbal medicine that was both confusing and impractical. Overall, this book is very well done, and the additions provide valuable insights into the origins and development of the Bubishi. For those who already own an older edition of the Bubishi, it may not be necessary to purchase the new edition, as the majority of the content is the same, but even then, the added original illustrations and new content add to the depth of study possible with this classic work.
McCarthy’s work also includes groundbreaking research on Okinawan and Chinese history, as well as the fighting and healing traditions that developed in those countries, making it a goldmine for researchers and practitioners alike.
