But what do I know? The final confrontation is somewhat odd, and the story comes to a conclusion in a way that is quite different from most other stories like this. The Heechee found out that there was a race of pure energy called simply The Foe or alternatively called either The Assassins or The Kugel wiping out civilizations on any planet where they emerged.
Although Pohl relies rather heavily on cute aliens and wise-guy computer programs, his restless, loquacious narrator Robin whips the reader from planet to planet and from past to future, rapidly solving problems and just as rapidly shoveling up new ones in the best Pohl fashion. A novel in the best-selling, award-winning Heechee series. I’ve enjoyed Pohl’s writing and may read other books he’s written but I really need to get away from Robin Broadhead!
But this one is a stinker.
I spent a lot of my time during the book, theorising for myself who the for are and how things would end, and you can ask nothing more of a SF novel than a great storyline and material to ponder over.
